How To Protect Yourself From Voice Mail Hacking

Voice mail and concerns about voice mail “hacking” have been receiving a lot of attention in the news recently. Please know that Virgin Mobile and Sprint, our parent company, place a high priority on protecting the personal information of our customers.

Virgin Mobile USA is one of Sprint’s prepaid brands. Sprint has responded and will continue to respond to threats of this sort of criminally fraudulent activity with a multi-tiered approach that includes the use of technology at the server level, technology made available on individual devices and education of consumers about best practices they can utilize for safeguarding their information.

The fact is a passcode offers the best protection when it comes to protecting a customer’s voice mail account from unauthorized access.

When a Virgin Mobile customer sets up a voice mail account, the customer is required to establish a passcode. We strongly encourage that you continue using that passcode.

If the customer chooses to skip the passcode, we respond with a very strong message to remind you that the voice mail account will be vulnerable to unauthorized access without passcode protection.

This decision, however, is up to the customer to make. Sprint and Virgin Mobile proactively offer guidance and information, but the customer must balance the desire for convenience with other concerns.

We make information available to our customers during the voice mail set-up process and make use of other forms of communication to raise awareness about these risks, Sprint’s recommended approach and other available resources.

As CTIA notes, pretexting and many forms of “spoofing,” two techniques that reportedly can be used to facilitate unauthorized voice mail access, are illegal in the United States when used for these deceptive purposes.
